Travel Poster Wall Art, From Saved Pin to Hung Frame

You pinned the poster. Three steps get it on the wall: pick the style, choose how you get it made, and print it at the right size. This page walks all three, including the route where the poster is made from your own travel photo.

Step 1

Which style is your wall?

Pick the style first and the destination second: two different cities in the same style always hang well together, two styles of the same city rarely do. Choose your style, then carry it into Step 2.

Step 2

Choose your route to the wall

Pick by one question: whose trip is on the poster? A destination you dream about → buy it finished or download it. A trip you actually took → make it from your own photo.

Step 3

Print it right, hang it straight

Only matters for Routes B and C. Most poster disappointment is a sizing mistake, not a design mistake; three rules cover nearly every wall.

Pick the size from the furniture

Artwork should span about two-thirds of whatever sits under it. Sofa: 24x36. Desk or dresser: 18x24. Narrow hallway slot: 12x18. Gallery wall: mix 8x10 and 11x14 around one anchor piece.

Match the ratio before you buy the frame

Classic travel posters are 2:3 (12x18, 18x24 fits with a mat, 24x36). Frames off the shelf are cheapest in those sizes. A 3:4 file in a 2:3 frame loses its caption to the crop, so check the ratio first.

Print at 150+ pixels per inch on matte

200gsm matte paper is the sweet spot for flat-color styles. Multiply print size by 150 for minimum pixels: 18x24 needs 2700x3600. Below that, upscale the file before ordering.

The short version

Save these four rules

  1. 01Match poster style before destination: two cities in the same style hang well together; two styles of the same city rarely do.
  2. 02Three routes to travel poster wall art in 2026: buy it finished on metal, generate it from your own travel photo with a free AI tool, or download a printable.
  3. 03Size from the furniture: artwork should span about two-thirds the width of the sofa, bed, or dresser under it.
  4. 04Print at 150+ pixels per inch on 200gsm matte paper; an 18x24 poster needs a 2700x3600-pixel file.

Quick answers before you start

What size poster goes above a sofa or bed?

Aim for artwork about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Above a standard sofa that lands at 24x36 inches for a single poster, or a pair of 18x24s with a small gap. Above a queen bed, one 24x36 or a trio of 12x18s both work.

Matte or glossy for travel posters?

Matte, almost always. Vintage and art deco styles rely on flat color, and gloss adds glare that fights the look under living-room lighting. Save gloss for photographic prints with deep blacks.

Will a phone photo or AI image print sharp at 18x24?

Yes, if the file is big enough: 150 pixels per inch is the practical floor for wall art, so an 18x24 needs about 2700x3600 pixels. Upscale before printing rather than letting the print shop stretch a small file.

What is the standard travel poster size?

The 2:3 family: 12x18, 18x24, and 24x36 inches. Vintage rail posters were taller and narrower, which is why classic designs sometimes crop awkwardly into modern frames; check the ratio before committing to a frame.

How do you hang posters without damaging the wall?

Adhesive strips rated above your frame’s weight handle most framed prints. Magnet-mounted metal posters skip holes entirely, and poster rails hang from a single pin. Renters lose deposits to wall anchors, not to posters.

Can I sell posters I make with AI?

Personal use is simple; selling depends on the license terms of the tool that generated the image, so check them before listing. If you do sell, the listing photos matter as much as the design: see our Etsy product photo guide.
